New Year New Roles

We are delighted to announce that further to a reorganisation of our resources during the autumn, David Bassett has joined the EATiP team in the capacity as Senior Adviser.

Familiar to many EATiP members through our General Assembly meetings, since 2017 David has been working with EATiP as the project manager for the EU Horizon 2020 funded EURASTiP international support action (www.eurastip.eu) working on the development of multi stakeholder platforms for the aquaculture sector in south east Asia and their scope for increased interaction with European stakeholders.  With this project now entering the final stages of reporting, it is an excellent opportunity for David to take on leading other initiatives on behalf of EATiP, including strategy and policy work.

David has worked in the aquaculture sector since 2005, spending a decade as the Chief Executive of a UK aquaculture producers association.  It is through this role that he first became active in European aquaculture, working closely with FEAP (www.feap.info)  where he followed a number of EU FP6 & FP7 projects as an industry representative in addition to participating in meetings of the European Commission ACFA Working Group 2.

David Bassett: looking forward to driving the aquaculture innovation agenda forward with EATiP.

Through this collaboration with FEAP, David was also engaged in the early stages of the planning and development of both EATiP and the Aquainnova project.

For 9 years David acted as a director of the Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum (which has now been replaced by Scottish Aquaculture & Innovation Centre (www.scottishaquaculture.com) , an EATiP Mirror Platform) and also acted as the Company Secretary of an industry owned and managed quality certification scheme.  He worked on the steering committee of the WWF Aquaculture Dialogues (Rainbow Trout), sat on the Technical Advisory Group of the ASC during the transition stage of the dialogues to Standards and has served as an industry representative on the management committee of the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling (UK).

David is currently based in Edinburgh (UK) but has travelled extensively on project work addressing  both European and south east Asian aquaculture production.  He has a personal interest in history and international relations having studied in those fields and looks forward to a time when, in addition to working online, we are able to travel, network and learn in person again!

BIOGEARS PROJECT

Dear Aquaculture stakeholders,

BIOGEARS project kindly asks for your input and views for the potential implementation of biobased ropes in the European aquaculture sector.

BIOGEARS is an EASME EMFF funded project, under the Call Topic: EMFF-01-2018 Blue Labs: innovative solutions for maritime challenges. BIOGEARS aims to provide the European aquaculture sector with biobased, biodegradable ropes that are durable, marketable and fit-for-purpose, and hence have a highly reduced carbon footprint along the whole value chain.

As a stakeholder, you are invited to contribute to the consultation and by doing so you are having your say on the implementation and opportunities for eco-friendly alternatives to conventional (non-biodegradable) aquaculture gears to be used in the aquaculture sector. This consultation should take no more than 10 minutes.

INNOVATIONS TO SUPPORT FISH WELFARE – WEBINAR PRESENTATIONS

Europe has one of the world’s highest standards of animal welfare. It provides the European aquaculture sector with a competitive advantage in the consumer’s search for safe, healthy and environmental-friendly food products. The Farm to Fork Strategy, which is at the heart of the European Green Deal, is aiming to strengthen this position. The EATiP Forum highlighted a set of smart solutions and digitalization tools to achieve better monitoring, control and management for different aquaculture systems, both at sea and on land.

The presentations can be viewed by clicking on the titles below.

The forum was organised in collaboration with the EU funded project AQUAEXCEL2020.

AQUAFEED OF THE FUTURE – WEBINAR OCTOBER 30TH

The first virtual EATiP Forum in a series of webinars related to aquaculture topics of high importance for the sector was held on October 30. More than 150 participants from 100 entities throughout Europe joined the event. Short talks about innovations in the the production of insect, single-cell protein and algae based fish feed were combined with Q&A sessions and surveys on the expected impact of the different solutions.

Please find below the presentations:

AQUAFEED OF THE FUTURE – WEBINAR OCTOBER 30TH

The Farm to Fork Strategy aims to reduce the environmental and climate impact of animal production, and to support the ongoing transition towards more sustainable livestock farming. Therefore, the European Commission will facilitate the placing on the market of sustainable and innovative feed additives. EATiP acknowledges the limitations on specific resource supplies for compound feeds. In addition to contributing to the sustainability of the sector, it is critical that alternative feed ingredients should not reduce the dietary and health attributes of the final product. The aim of this webinar is to show the potential of new ingredients for aquafeed, to highlight innovations in the use of algae, insects and single-cell proteins as promising feed ingredients and to stimulate discussions and potential project collaboration among attendants.

The forum is organised in collaboration with the EU funded project AQUAEXCEL2020.

EATiP involved in the Blue-Cloud project

Alexandra Neyts has entered the Blue-Cloud External Stakeholders Expert Board on behalf of EATiP. Her task is to provide feedback on strategic choices, ensure the project’s relevance for aquaculture applications and advise on how to support innovations.

EATiP is eager to learn how the Blue-Cloud services might help the sector to better manage and operate its farms using tools and indicators derived from marine data. Integrated monitoring systems, transparent data collection and targeted models can contribute to a more predictable and evidence-based licensing system across Europe.

Last but successful meeting of the AQUAEXCEL2020 IRAP

The AQUAEXCEL2020 Industry & Research Advisory Panel and workpackage leaders met on the 29th April – online – to select high potential industry-relevant outputs for transfer to the aquaculture industry.

EATiP thanks all the experts for their input in this last but very successful meeting of the Advisory Panel.

The selected project outputs will be presented at the next AQUAEXCEL2020 brokerage event to be held at Aquaculture Europe in Cork later in the year.

Last but not least the EATiP is pleased to announce its partnership in the follow up project AQUAEXCEL 3.0. where our EATiP experts and Mirror Platforms will play a essential role.

Apply for fully EC-funded access to top class research infrastructures with AQUAEXCEL2020

17th Call for Access NOW OPEN!

On a regular basis, the AQUAEXCEL2020 project invites proposals from European research groups for scientific research that utilises the facilities of any of the participating aquaculture research infrastructures. The AQUAEXCEL2020 project unites major aquaculture experimental facilities with capacity to undertake experimental trials on a selection of commercially important fish aquaculture species and system types. These installations are made available to the research community for Transnational Access (TNA) with the support of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. Transnational Access involves a research group in one country collaborating with one or more AQUAEXCEL2020 Infrastructures that are located in a different country to the applicant, and which offer facilities and expertise not available in their own country.

Deadline: 6 March 2020

More details and to apply: see attached flyer, and https://aquaexcel2020.eu/transnational-access/call-access

Further details about the scheme and full instructions for preparing and submitting proposals are available on the website. For further queries regarding the Call for Access please contact John Bostock: j.c.bostock@stir.ac.uk.

Interested people with a project idea who need a little help finding the right facility can contact our orientation committee at aquaexcel-OC@inra.fr.

We also have a number of “success stories” from previous TNA users – https://aquaexcel2020.eu/transnational-access/tna-projects which can be used as inspiration. Here TNA users have described how they utilised this opportunity and how the TNA has benefited their research and careers.

AQUAEXCEL2020 is a research infrastructure project funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme and coordinated by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). The project aims to further support the sustainable growth of the European aquaculture sector. For more details see the project website: https://aquaexcel2020.eu/
