Copernicus Training workshop

Production in sea-based aquaculture is strongly interlinked with the state of the surrounding marine environment. A better use of the available data through the Copernicus Marine Environment Service can lead to more appropriate and reliable models for aquaculture planning, siting and operations. Together with Mercator Ocean International, the European provider of open marine data and services, EATiP invites aquaculture stakeholders to attend its training workshop on real-time environmental monitoring.  Through a co-creative process, we believe Copernicus can become a suitable instrument to support an evidence-based aquaculture management.

EOOS Conference

In November 2018, the EOOS conference was held in Brussels to discuss a better connection between ocean observation and end-user services. EATiP contributed to this process.

Alexandra Neyts, EATiP General Secretary

For observations and data to have economic and societal value, the main issues to be taken into account were believed to be:

  • Clarity & usability – streamline data access and make it more user friendly
  • Quality Assurance & standardisation
  • Transdisciplinary skills & approaches for the whole value chain

Involving industry (and promote data sharing) was meant to require:

  • Transparency, trust, common language, understand sensitivities & motivations
  • Win-win incentives (voluntary)
  • Regulation (mandatory): e.g. data sharing as prerequisite to obtain offshore licences.

The Call to Action, speakers’ presentations, pictures and video of the event are also available on the Conference website at www.EOOSConference2018.eu

‘Training and Trade’ and to the ‘Sustainable Aquaculture’ session at SeaTechWeek.

On October 10th, Catherine Pons participated at the SeaTechWeek in Brest (France), an international marine science & technology week on marine bioresources.

Norway was guest of honour and several talks and workshops were organised on the latest technologies and methods for better management of marine resources in Norway.

The event lasted 5 days and many parallel sessions took place on Technology, Socio-economics, Management & Preservation, Bio process, Regulation, Environment and Fisheries & Aquaculture.

EATiP was invited to the second round table plenary session, entitled ‘Training and Trade’ and to the ‘Sustainable Aquaculture’.

EATIP at AQUA 2018

AQUA2018 EU EATIP Day: “FEED GLOBALLY – PRODUCE LOCALLY”

Monday, August 27    09:00 – 15:30    Barthez

AQUA 2018 #WeRAquaculture gathers producers, investors, suppliers, processors, vendors, scientists, educators, students and consumers of farmed aquatic products worldwide in Montpellier from August 25 to 29.

As a joint effort, the Marine Resources Unit of the European Commission, Directorate General Research and Innovation (DG RTD), and EATiP are setting focus on the impact of European research for the benefit of aquaculture development within Europe as well as worldwide.  Through three consecutive sessions, they present some major outcomes of technology and innovation efforts that contribute to tackle the bottlenecks and opportunities in aquaculture towards the overall goal of ensuring food and nutrition security:

  1. Setting the scene: How can more food and biomass be obtained from aquaculture in a way that maximises the benefits for future generations?
  2. Aquaculture 4.0: automation, precision farming and data systems
  3. Sustainable global aquaculture

Listen to policy makers, debaters, scientists and innovators and join the debate that will feed into the European Commission FOOD 2030 initiative.

Please also come and visit the EATiP booth (#158) at the exhibition, which we share with the European Commission.

High Energy Mariculture Conference

The 9th edition of the conference and the first to be held as High Energy Mariculture will be held in Corfu, Greece from 17th-19th October. The conference supported by EATiP, has become a staple in the calendars of offshore mariculture industry and the 2018 programme has just been announced.

Sessions will cover:

  • Technology for High Energy operations and includes a presentation from Noralf Rønningen, Project and Development Manager, Aqualine and Board Member, EATiP on preparing technologies and systems for future growth;
  • Site Selection;
  • Hatcheries, breeding and genetics;
  • Feed and fish health;
  • Improving product value through marketing, certification and awards;
  • Business development and investment; and,
  • Successful high energy operations.

The full programme can be viewed here.

The conference offers six networking sessions, a conference dinner and a technical visit to the Corfu Sea Farm, allowing delegates to discuss their operations, technology or service away from the conference setting. This will provide delegates with the opportunity to meet with farmers and those involved in the industry first hand.

Places are limited, book online before 17th August and receive a 15% early bird discount by using the code ‘early’.

After the 17th August, members of EATiP are entitled to save 10% on the standard delegate rate – call the conference team on +44 1329 825335 or email conferences@offshoremariculture.com

EATIP 10th Annual Meeting

CommOCEAN 2018 – 3rd International Marine Science Communication Conference

Are you a professional communicator working in a marine institute, governmental body or a NGO, or a marine scientist that would like to be speed-trained by experts in the skills of modern ocean science communication?  Then CommOCEAN 2018 is for you. The conference programme combines hands-on exercises in current science communication skills for disseminating ocean research and technology, with plenty of expertise-sharing, social interaction and fascinating marine science along the way.

CommOCEAN 2018 will take place on 4-5 December 2018 in Southampton, United Kingdom.  Registration and call for abstracts are now open (Abstract submission deadline: 1 July 2018; Early Bird registration before 31 August 2018). You can find out more information about the conference, programme, fees and venue at http://www.commocean.org/

Dissemination, outreach and communication of scientific knowledge are becoming more and more important in today’s society, where social inclusion is an integral part of environmental protection and sustainable development.  This is particularly true for the world of ocean research, a world that is largely hidden from our view, representing an added challenge to the communication of marine research.  From its inception, the Ocean Literacy movement has advocated closer interaction between marine scientists, educators and other stakeholders (the public, policy-makers, private sector), and inspired new events and networks all over the world.  Both the EMSEA (European Marine Science Educators Association) annual conferences and CommOCEAN are prime examples of such new initiatives.  CommOCEAN as the International Marine Science Communication Conference, was launched by the European Marine Board Communications Panel (EMBCP) and organized in the first instance by its Portuguese partners (CIIMAR, Ciencia Viva) in Porto in 2014, and a second was held in Belgium in 2016 (Bruges-Ostend) and organized by VLIZ, EMB, EMBCP and UNESCO/IOC/IODE. CommOCEAN focuses on a target audience of young marine scientists and communicators who want to be trained in science communication skills.  The third event, in Southampton, UK, is being arranged and hosted by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and will see some of the programme split for marine scientists and professional communicators ensuring the programme is relevant, challenging and inspiring.

Keep track of CommOCEAN 2018 on Twitter and Facebook.

“Water & Fish” Conference in Belgrade

The 8th Conference “Water & Fish” will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, in June 13 – 15, 2018.

The main topics are water, as organisms’ habitat, and aquatic organisms, primarily fish.  This year, focus will be on biosecurity of aquatic organisms, but also on other topics suggested through conference presentation papers or poster contributions.
