API joins EATiP: furthering the industry / research & innovation collaboration.

EATiP is delighted to welcome as a new member to the platform API – the Associazione Piscicoltori Italiani.

API is a non-profit corporation which aims to protect, develop and consolidate all activities related to aquaculture in Italy.

API – brining Italy aquaculture industry representation to the heart of EATiP

Established in June 1964, the professional association represents over 300 fish farms operating with fresh, marine and brackish water and of many species, representing around 90% of the Italian finfish production.  Principle species farmed in Italy include Trout, Bass and Bream but there is also production of Mullet, Sturgeon (for Caviar) and Eel along with carps, catfish and other species of freshwater fish. For further details you can look at production figures here.

API’s work focuses on providing up-to-date knowledge and training opportunities to ensure the continuous professional development of fish farm workers. API has national and international recognition and exposure and collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders and a large network of fish farmers from all production methods across all of Italy.

Having collaborated informally with EATiP over a number of years through various collaborations and projects, we are delighted to welcome API to our formal list of core members.  It is vital for technology platforms to be industry led and to maintain close relations with farmers and producers.  The merits of the multi stakeholder approach is that it allows for a two way communication process between active stakeholders – industry informing and advising of their priorities and emerging issues and researchers disseminating and sharing project outputs, information on new technologies and farming practices and advice.

We look forward to continuing our close working relationship – which in Italy now includes not only API but also the research network ISPRA and the Italian Mirror Platform ITAQUA.  A strong representation to assist in driving forward the ambitions for an expanding and sustainable aquaculture sector in Europe from one of the key aquaculture producing European Union member states.

Copernicus Marine for the Aquaculture Sector first

The European Aquaculture Technology & Innovation Platform (EATIP) and Mercator Ocean International, organize in September 24 – 25 in Athens, Greece, an event entitled:

Copernicus Marine Service Workshop & Training for the Aquaculture Sector

The objectives are to :

– Allow the aquaculture community to share issues they are facing regarding the management of aquaculture farms.
– Show how the Copernicus Marine Service might contribute to tackle current and future challenges.

EATiP Mirror Platform Meeting

Representatives from twelve EATiP Mirror Platforms met in Berlin on January 22 and 23 to interact and to discuss common interregional challenges.

Yolanda Molares (ACUIPLUS) was appointed as Mirror Platform chairperson. It was also decided to develop a document pointing out the priorities in aquaculture research and innovation, based on the draft EATiP position paper.  The work will be carried out in four different working groups, i.e. Coldwater marine, Freshwater, Mediterranean and Shellfish, algae and other species.  Results will be presented at the EATiP Annual General Meeting.  The engagement in collaborative projects and joint actions was also discussed.

After the meeting a visit was paid to the ECF Aquaponic Farm, a site located centrally in Berlin which combines cultivation of Tilapia with the production of basil.

CommOCEAN 2018 – 3rd International Marine Science Communication Conference

Are you a professional communicator working in a marine institute, governmental body or a NGO, or a marine scientist that would like to be speed-trained by experts in the skills of modern ocean science communication?  Then CommOCEAN 2018 is for you. The conference programme combines hands-on exercises in current science communication skills for disseminating ocean research and technology, with plenty of expertise-sharing, social interaction and fascinating marine science along the way.

CommOCEAN 2018 will take place on 4-5 December 2018 in Southampton, United Kingdom.  Registration and call for abstracts are now open (Abstract submission deadline: 1 July 2018; Early Bird registration before 31 August 2018). You can find out more information about the conference, programme, fees and venue at http://www.commocean.org/

Dissemination, outreach and communication of scientific knowledge are becoming more and more important in today’s society, where social inclusion is an integral part of environmental protection and sustainable development.  This is particularly true for the world of ocean research, a world that is largely hidden from our view, representing an added challenge to the communication of marine research.  From its inception, the Ocean Literacy movement has advocated closer interaction between marine scientists, educators and other stakeholders (the public, policy-makers, private sector), and inspired new events and networks all over the world.  Both the EMSEA (European Marine Science Educators Association) annual conferences and CommOCEAN are prime examples of such new initiatives.  CommOCEAN as the International Marine Science Communication Conference, was launched by the European Marine Board Communications Panel (EMBCP) and organized in the first instance by its Portuguese partners (CIIMAR, Ciencia Viva) in Porto in 2014, and a second was held in Belgium in 2016 (Bruges-Ostend) and organized by VLIZ, EMB, EMBCP and UNESCO/IOC/IODE. CommOCEAN focuses on a target audience of young marine scientists and communicators who want to be trained in science communication skills.  The third event, in Southampton, UK, is being arranged and hosted by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and will see some of the programme split for marine scientists and professional communicators ensuring the programme is relevant, challenging and inspiring.

Keep track of CommOCEAN 2018 on Twitter and Facebook.
