International cooperation

The International Cooperation Working Group (INCO) develops strategies, approaches and actions for supporting and achieving international cooperation on aquaculture within the framework of EATiP.

South Africa – Brasil – Europe

BrATiP

This AANChOR Joint Pilot Action has the aim to prepare the foundations of an industry-driven, membership-based, multi-stakeholder Brazilian Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform that can serve as a model to other Atlantic countries. Its ambition is to support the application in aquaculture of new and emerging technologies, innovation and business opportunities, the transfer of knowledge and technology, and implementation of the Belem Statement for the benefit of society. Ultimately, the aim is to develop an All-Atlantic Aquaculture Platform starting with pilot cases such as the Brazilian one.

South-East Asia – Europe

EURASTIP

The European Asian aquaculture Technology and innovation Platform (EURASTiP) is a three year research, development and innovation project, funded through the EU Horizon 2020 programme, and developed in response to EU call “reinforcing international cooperation on sustainable aquaculture production with countries from South East Asia”(see – H2020 SFS-24-2016).  EURASTiP will provide a structured basis for multi-stakeholder dialogue in the aquaculture community, within South East Asia and between South East Asia and the EU.  In order to achieve this, EURASTiP will build on the experience of the European Aquaculture Technology and innovation Platform (EATiP),the  ASEM aquaculture platform and the individual EURASTiP consortium partners.

GALWAY STATEMENT

The Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation was signed on 24 May 2013 by the European Union, Canada and the United States. This statement establishes a formal Atlantic Ocean Research Cooperation between the CA, EU and the US and partner countries that builds on existing initiatives and programmes to:

  • improve ocean health and stewardship
  • promote sustainable management of resources
  • improve ecosystem assessments and forecasts and deeper understanding of vulnerabilities and risks, including climate change
  • generate new tools to increase resilience, conserve rich biodiversity, manage risk and determine social, environmental, and economic priorities
  • promote our citizens’ understanding of the value of the Atlantic by promoting oceans literacy

The signatories of the Galway Statement mandated Fisheries & Oceans (DFO), Canada, the European Commission (EC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USA, to implement the commitments taken and to guide the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance.  These governing bodies established the Trilateral Galway Implementation Committee.

BELEM STATEMENT

The Blue Growth program calls for a coordination action between Europe and the South-Atlantic (Brasil, South Africa), as a step towards the implementation of the Belem Statement. It was concluded that EATiP does not have the capacity to lead this initiative, but the Board was positive towards its engagement in an existing application. A collaboration between the new South-Atlantic Flagship and the ongoing North-Atlantic initiative is strongly encouraged by the Commission, which is wary of establishing a North-South divide.
