Aquatic food – a priority theme in the EU’s new agri-food Research & Innovation Strategic Approach

On 8 September 2026, the European Commission published its new Strategic Approach to Research and Innovation for competitive, resilient and sustainable agriculture, forestry, rural areas and food systems. Although not listed in the title, the strategy extends to aquaculture and fisheries.

Aquatic food is one of the six areas for action of Food 2040. In line with the forthcoming EU ocean and water research and innovation strategy, it will foster new knowledge and solutions in support of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in marine and inland waters — addressing animal health and welfare, breeding and feeding, reduced reliance on feed imports, sustainable aquaculture (including organic, offshore and integrated multi-trophic systems) and the market uptake of underutilised aquatic biomass such as algae and by-products.

EATiP is pleased to see European Technology Platforms explicitly recognised among the organisations the Commission will engage to support deployment, alongside EIT Food and the European Innovation Council.
