Initiation toward a Brazilian Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (BrATiP) as a first step towards an All Atlantic Aquaculture Platform.

EATiP is being funded through the All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance CSA (AANChOR) to undertake a Joint Pilot Action (JPA) addressing the establishment of multi stakeholder platforms for aquaculture in support of the principles of the Belém Statement.

The JPA will address the Belém Statement themes “Food security, fisheries management, aquaculture and biodiversity”  and seeks to clarify the current and future role of aquaculture as an increasingly significant contributor to the Blue economy / food systems and food security  in Brazil, South Africa & other relevant nations / regions.  In addition to this, there are further linkages to other themes addressed under the Belém statement, including: Climate variability and ecosystem approaches, Ocean observation and technology, sustainable use of marine resources, social licence, better monitoring and forecasting activities, human health and well being and ocean-engaged citizens through enhanced ocean literacy activities.

Supported by BlueEcoNet and Innovation Norway, this JPA is the first step in the ambitious aspiration towards scoping out a potential all Atlantic multi stakeholder platform to address technology, innovation and a strategic research and innovation agenda (SRIA) for the Atlantic aquaculture sector.

Aquaculture in Brazil

Using the Brazilian aquaculture sector as a case study, the JPA will facilitate both the preparation and hosting of an in person, facilitated brokerage event – most likely to be held in the second quarter of 2022 and in Brazil –  where invited key stakeholders will participate in the creation of a roadmap for the development of a multi stakeholder platform and the identification of potential SRIA priorities required for the successful sustainable development of national aquaculture sectors.  The workshop aims to be as inclusive as possible and to consider both marine and freshwater aquaculture, finfish and shellfish, and include low trophic and integrated aquaculture including algae.

Using methodology developed in the establishment of EATiP (European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform) and subsequently employed in south Asia as part of the Horizon 2020 funded EURASTiP project, the scoping exercise for the Brazilian platform will also include stakeholders from other Atlantic nations including South Africa, Argentina and Cape Verde.

The JPA will collaborate with other initiatives working in the field of Atlantic Aquaculture wherever possible, including both the ASTRAL and Aquavitae projects and will engage representatives of industry, research, academia, government/regulators and education in the pursuit of developing the role of aquaculture in the Brazilian and ultimately all Atlantic blue bio-economy.

The key objectives of what is foreseen as a 2 day brokerage event include:

  • To prepare the foundations of an industry-driven, membership-based, multi-stakeholder Brazilian Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform that can serve as a model to other Atlantic countries, with the aim to support the application in aquaculture of new and emerging technologies, innovation and business opportunities and the transfer of knowledge and technology
  • To bring together different stakeholders along the aquaculture value chain throughout Brazil (- and other regions across the Atlantic).
  • To establish synergies, partnerships and joint innovation opportunities
  • To create win-win collaboration and business opportunities within Brazil and in the long-term, potentially across the Atlantic region
  • To stimulate interest among Brazilian aquaculture stakeholders towards the identification of strategic research and innovation priorities for the sustainable development of Brazilian aquaculture. It is hoped this would lead to a consolidation into a more structured and agreed Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda.
  • Considering a potential framework for the exchange of best practice and knowledge transfer in aquaculture production, research, education, innovation, regulation and development – both in Brazil and further afield.
  • Improved channels of communication, networking and potential for interaction across all participant areas (industry, academia, policy makers etc.)
  • Improve Atlantic international cooperation in the field of sustainable aquaculture to ensure food and feed security.

For reference, it is the intention for Portuguese / English translation to be made available.
