Benvenuto ISPRA!

We are delighted to announce that the latest new member to join EATiP is ISPRA – the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research.  ISPRA is a public research institute comprising some 1200 staff, with 8 Regional offices in Italy, Headquartered in Rome.  It is the institutional and technical-scientific reference point within Italy for environmental monitoring, control and reporting with respect to environmental protection, the evaluation and mitigation of environmental impacts, and monitoring of the quality of the environment, habitats and biodiversity including land, air, sea and sustainable use of natural resources.  In addition ISPRA:

  • coordinates the Italian National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA), comprising 19 Regional and 2 Provincial Environmental Protection Agencies with a workforce of over 10,000 employees. ISPRA also formally supports the Civil Protection for seismic, hydrogeological and environmental risks
  • provides technical support to the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea and other governmental authorities responsible for environmental policies and promotes and implements research and strategic  approaches  to  tackle  all issues concerning  biodiversity  and  habitat conservation, sustainability, circular economy and green transition.
  • is the statutory National Competence Centre for: Waste cycle and circular economy; Environmental emergencies; Coastal environment and oceanography; Environmental education, libraries and museums network; Environmental laboratories.

Aquaculture & ISPRA

ISPRA – further expanding the EATiP Network

Focussing on aquaculture, the Sustainable Aquaculture Area in ISPRA is organized under the Department for Environment and Biodiversity. It provides technical and scientific support on aquaculture issues to national and regional competent authorities, Producer’s Associations and aquaculture companies.

The aquaculture group has coordinated more than 50 research projects in marine and freshwater aquaculture among others:

CADEAU  This project developed tools to support the enforcement of EU Directives related to coastal areas, with particular reference to WFD, MSFD, MSPD & BWD.  This is just one action that ISPRA has been engaged in as part of the wider Copernicus Programme, building an active dialogue between aquaculture stakeholders and increasing the awareness of EO tools and Copernicus outputs.

PerformFISH. Part of the Horizon 2020 programme, this project considers a European wide collection of production data at farm level, in collaboration with over 90% of Med-EU marine fish farms, for sectoral analysis on sustainability, efficiency and environmental performances of aquaculture companies. ISPRA developed a benchmarking system based on 55 Key Performances Indicators (KPIs) and an aquaculture cloud (allocated in D4Science in coll. With CNR-ISTI) that is used today by the five Producer’s Associations of Italy, Croatia, France, Spain, Greece and by fish farms Companies for sustainability analysis at farm and sectoral level.

Last but successful meeting of the AQUAEXCEL2020 IRAP

The AQUAEXCEL2020 Industry & Research Advisory Panel and workpackage leaders met on the 29th April – online – to select high potential industry-relevant outputs for transfer to the aquaculture industry.

EATiP thanks all the experts for their input in this last but very successful meeting of the Advisory Panel.

The selected project outputs will be presented at the next AQUAEXCEL2020 brokerage event to be held at Aquaculture Europe in Cork later in the year.

Last but not least the EATiP is pleased to announce its partnership in the follow up project AQUAEXCEL 3.0. where our EATiP experts and Mirror Platforms will play a essential role.

EATiP in Government Europa: How to approach aquaculture innovation

European aquaculture encompasses the cultivation of a wide range of fish and shellfish species and is a truly pan-European production activity, which has grown rapidly from a cottage industry in the 1960s into an industrial sector that is composed of multinational companies, SMEs and family firms.

A common thread to each of aquaculture’s components is the knowledge base that has been developed through innovative research and development activities, led by universities and institutes throughout Europe, which have contributed to globally recognised levels of excellence in innovation.

Aquaculture in Europe has created a dynamic and effective knowledge-based sector. While most of the products of European aquaculture are destined for the European consumer, the sector’s service and knowledge activities have set international standards for global aquaculture innovation and development.

The European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATiP) has been designed to include all members of the European aquaculture value chain, from suppliers through producers to processors within the profession, as well as leading research groups and key representative organisations.

Goverment Europa this week had a chat with EATiP general secretary Alexandra Neyts about the importance of a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to aquaculture innovation. Among the things that were discussed, was the strategic research and innovation agenda (SRIA) and EATiPs involvement in different aquaculture projects.

The first advanced training session – “Sea governance and blue growth: balancing sustainable use and conservation through Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in the field of fisheries and aquaculture” – of Deep Blue project will take place in Trieste (Italy) from September 23rd to September 27th 2019.

Survey on aquaculture outreach

Public perception has been identified by EATiP as a major issue in reaching  a social license to grow. The EU-funded AORA project has performed a study in the US and Canada, but are still missing the feedback from European stakeholders to be able to provide an adequate analysis of the situation here.

In addition to the draft results presented and discussed at the EATiP AGM in Brussels, we kindly ask the aquaculture stakeholders to please answer the survey on aquaculture outreach at http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/seafoodfuture/survey by July 15 at the latest. It should not take more than 10-15 minutes.

An analysis of the results will be made available to through EATiP.  Please spread the invitation to your colleagues and collaborators.

Thank you in advance for your contribution!

A 360 video at fish farm Aquanaria

As part of an episode on how fish farming could offer the world a more sustainable future, the Euronews Ocean team shot a 360 video at fish farm Aquanaria. The firm, which is based in the Canary Islands, says its goal is to produce perfect fish for high-end restaurants. Thanks to an innovative design, the company’s net pens are fixed well away from the shore to allow strong Atlantic currents to pass through its nets.

“The fish are happier in these open waters”

Pedro Sánchez, Aquanaria’s Commercial Director, says the location and the fact the nets go deep under water creates ideal conditions for the fish to thrive:“We are in this location for many many years, in this part of the island. We have been moving away from the shore more and more and more, as soon as the technology allows us to be there, because it’s really good for — not so good for us, but it’s good for the fish. The fish are happier in these open waters.”

AQUA2018 EU EATIP Day: “FEED GLOBALLY – PRODUCE LOCALLY”

Monday, August 27    09:00 – 15:30    Barthez

AQUA 2018 #WeRAquaculture gathers producers, investors, suppliers, processors, vendors, scientists, educators, students and consumers of farmed aquatic products worldwide in Montpellier from August 25 to 29.

As a joint effort, the Marine Resources Unit of the European Commission, Directorate General Research and Innovation (DG RTD), and EATiP are setting focus on the impact of European research for the benefit of aquaculture development within Europe as well as worldwide.  Through three consecutive sessions, they present some major outcomes of technology and innovation efforts that contribute to tackle the bottlenecks and opportunities in aquaculture towards the overall goal of ensuring food and nutrition security:

  1. Setting the scene: How can more food and biomass be obtained from aquaculture in a way that maximises the benefits for future generations?
  2. Aquaculture 4.0: automation, precision farming and data systems
  3. Sustainable global aquaculture

Listen to policy makers, debaters, scientists and innovators and join the debate that will feed into the European Commission FOOD 2030 initiative.

Please also come and visit the EATiP booth (#158) at the exhibition, which we share with the European Commission.
